Iran marks anniversary of Iran-Iraq war Empty Iran marks anniversary of Iran-Iraq war

TEHRAN, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Iran marked the 33rd anniversary of the Iran-Iraq war on Sunday by a large-scale military parade and displaying its military achievements.

The country's armed forces, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Basij militia voluntary forces took part in a parade to display the military capabilities of the Islamic Republic at the ceremony.

The Iran-Iraq war, lasting from September 1980 to August 1988, came at a great cost of lives and economic damage to the two countries. Half a million Iraqi and Iranian soldiers as well as civilians are believed to have died in the war, with many more injured.

Addressing the ceremony, President Hassan Rouhani urged the West to accept Iran's nuclear enrichment rights.

"Enrichment inside Iran and within the international rules and conventions should be endorsed" by Western powers, said Rouhani.

By making the remarks, the president is reasserting Iran's longtime position that nuclear enrichment is the "inalienable right" of the country.

"The Iranian nation is ready to have dialog with the West provided that there is no pre-condition for the talks," he said.

"The negotiations should be based on the equal footing and mutual respect ... and they should accept all the rights of the Iranians including the nuclear and enrichment rights," said the Iranian president.

His words came ahead of his planned address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday in New York on a number of issues, including the sensitive nuclear program.

The president also said Iran has no intention to develop the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) and is pursuing social and economic developments instead.

"The Islamic republic and its armed forces are not a threat to the neighbours," he said, adding that those who have violated the international regulations and compiled chemical and nuclear weapons are threats to the region.

The military might of Iran is aimed at deterring purposes and his country will not hesitate to respond firmly to any aggression, said Rouhani.

Rouhani had said that under his administration the Islamic republic will "interact constructively" with the world and will be "more transparent" over its nuclear activities.

Elsewhere, the Iranian president said "We are supporting the demands of the nations, including those of the Syrian nation."

"All should do their efforts to stop civil war in Syria," said Rouhani, adding that "The opposition should enter negotiations with the Syrian government."
