Symantec has revealed that hackers have targeted companies in the US and European energy sector with an electronic espionage campaign that in some cases succeeded in penetrating key activities that control their operations.
Symantec said in a report published on Wednesday that the pirates had resorted to launching attacks using malicious e-mail to piracy on organizations in the United States, Turkey, Switzerland and other countries most likely.
Electronic attacks, launched in late 2015 and intensified in April this year, are likely to be carried out by a foreign government and bear the hallmarks of a piracy group known as Dragonfly, Symantec's e-security researcher Eric Xian said in an interview.
The research raises concerns that industrial firms, including energy service providers and other facilities, are vulnerable to cyber attacks that could be used for destructive purposes in the event of a major geopolitical conflict.
In June, the US government warned industrial companies against piracy targeting the nuclear and energy sectors.
Xi'an said dozens of companies were targeted and that a number of them, including in the United States, were adversely affected at the operational level.
