Eight members of the security forces and a civilian were killed during mistaken clashes between the police and army in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
"The incident took place after receiving false information that there were armed tribal militias in the area," a police spokesman said.
"Last night, the security forces besieged us and then fired at us. We defended ourselves and the fighting continued for hours. We lost two soldiers and my colleague's wife. "
The UN-backed government is now waging a war against Islamist militants, but many of its security forces lack good training and poor coordination.
