Jared Kouchner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump and his adviser, used a special e-mail, along with his official White House account, to exchange messages with other officials.

The newspaper pointed out yesterday that the e-mails, including correspondence on media coverage and planning of events and other topics. Kouchner's father, Louis Lowell, confirmed that his client had complied with the rules for keeping government records by re-sending e-mails to his official account.

"Mr Kouchner used his White House e-mail to do some official work," Lowell said in a statement. "Less than 100 e-mails from January to August have either been sent by Mr. Kouchner or sent back to his White House colleagues from his own e-mail," he said.

"These messages were usually press articles or political comments, most of which were when someone reciprocated by sending an e-mail to him, in addition to his official e-mail," the statement said.

Other assistants in the Trump administration also used private e-mail accounts, including Rens Prepos, the former chief of staff at the White House, and Steve Bannon, a former chief strategist and economic adviser Gary Cohen.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Republicans mocked Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton for using her own email in official correspondence when she was secretary of state in the Obama administration.

Some of these messages were then classified as confidential.

Many White House officials use personal phones to communicate with reporters and others via text messages.
