The director of the US National Center for Counterterrorism warned that the defeats suffered by an extremist organization in Iraq and Syria did not limit the global threat posed by the extremist group.
Nick Rasmussen told the Senate House Committee on Homeland Security that he expected a militant organization, after losing its positions on the battlefield, to become a secret movement that would continue to launch attacks around the world and be a source of inspiration.
He stressed that "there is no direct link in fact between the status of a preacher in the battlefield in Iraq and Syria and the ability of the group to be a source of inspiration for attacks abroad."
Rasmussen, who has run the National Counterterrorism Center since 2014, added that "the ability of an organization to promote universal access remained largely unchanged."
He said the group was recruiting followers around the world and would continue to do so and was ready to launch attacks.
In its final defeat on the battlefield, US terrorism experts are expected to return to the way it was initially seen as al Qaeda in Iraq between 2004 and 2008, he said.
He said that al-Qaeda remained a strong threat despite the tyranny of an organization advocating it.
