The autonomous government of Catalonia, Spain, announced that the result of the referendum of separation, which Madrid calls "illegal", "yes" by 90%.
"The referendum was held, and the votes were cast and counted," spokesman Jordi Turol told a news conference in Barcelona  .
He pointed out that 90.9% of voters (2,220,144) voted "yes" while 7.87% voted "176,565" with "no".
He pointed out that 2.03% of the ballot papers were empty, and 0.89% were considered invalid.
He said the security forces closed some 400 of the 2315 polling stations during the referendum.
Turol blamed the central government and national police for the events in the referendum.
Spanish police on Sunday sought to prevent the referendum, which the Spanish Supreme Court ruled to be illegal; leading to clashes with voters, 844 of them were injured, according to the Ministry of Health in the province, and 33 members of the security, according to the Spanish Interior Ministry.
The province of Catalonia is demanding independence from the central government. The province, with a population of 7 million and 500,000 people, has the largest autonomy measures in the Spanish territories and is the seventh of 17 autonomous provinces in the country.
