    [ltr]A Turkish court on Wednesday launched a trial of some 40 soldiers accused of trying to kill President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during last year's coup attempt.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The judge of the court in Mogalla, southwest of Turkey, read the convictions of the first batch of defendants and sentenced them to life imprisonment, according to Reuters.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Mogla lies near the luxury resort, where Erdogan and his family escaped miraculously from a group of rebel soldiers who broke into the hotel during the night of the coup.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The trial, which began in February, is part of a large-scale campaign following the attempted coup last year, the largest case to date in which verdicts are handed down.[/ltr]
    [ltr]More than 240 people were killed on the evening of July 15 when the coup commanders led tanks, warplanes and helicopters, attacked parliament and tried to overthrow the government.[/ltr]
