The head of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans Georg Messin, said Thursday that more than 1,800 "potential Slavic terrorists" currently live in Germany.
"We are now facing not only a different kind of terrorism, but a different amount," he said at a public hearing. "My 10,300 people live in Germany, and more than 1,800 of them attribute them to potential terrorists."
"In the current year alone, our organization has received 650 warnings from the population in connection with a potential terrorist threat," he said, citing more than 30 successful terrorist acts in Europe since the beginning of 2015, including seven in Germany.
"There has been a growth in extremist movements, espionage and a threat to information security in Germany," he said, adding that "Islamic terrorism" remains the biggest threat to Germany at present.
