The Canadian Immigration Ministry has granted asylum to 800 Yezidi women and girls who have been expelled from Iraq by a pro-Iraqi organization.
"Today I am proud to announce that some 800 women and girls who have survived an advocacy organization have already arrived and started to rebuild their lives in Canada," Canadian Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussein said in a speech to the Canadian Parliament.
"I am still amazed at the generosity and empathy of the Canadians towards this very vulnerable group," Hussein said.
The Canadian parliament voted a year ago to describe the abuses against the Yezidis in northern Iraq as "genocide" and promised to receive 1,200 "most vulnerable survivors."
The Yezidis are a minority that is neither Muslim nor Arab. More than half a million people are concentrated, especially near the Syrian border in northern Iraq.
The Yezidis say their religion dates back thousands of years and originated from the ancient Babylonian religion in Mesopotamia. Others believe that their religion is a mixture of several ancient religions such as Zoroastrianism and Manichaeism.
In 2014, members of the Da'ash organization killed a large number of Yazidis in Sinjar in Nineveh province in northern Iraq, forcing tens of thousands of them to flee, while holding thousands of girls and women as war prisoners.
