The target of the S-400 Russian deal to Saudi Arabia?

    Baghdad - Journal News
The newspaper "Svabodnaabrasa" report, which talked about the agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, to conclude a deal to buy anti-aircraft systems of the "S-400".
The report said the Saudi army would receive an estimated $ 2 billion worth of anti-aircraft missile systems, although the exact parameters of the deal were not discussed. If the parties can agree on the terms of the deal in a short time and sign contracts, Saudi Arabia will become the third country to be supplied with the S-400 systems. Russia's first client was China, with the contract signed in September 2014 and Turkey, which concluded the contract in September 2017. While Beijing will begin receiving these systems after 2018, Turkey's first payment will come after 2019 .
After the meeting between Putin and King Salman, the director general of the Russian company Rosoboronexport, Alexander Mekhiev, and the chairman of the Saudi military industries, Ahmed Khatib, signed a contract in the presence of the Russian president and the Saudi king, allowing the assembly of Kalashnikov rifles in the Kingdom.
The Pentagon said it was concerned that some US allies were interested in acquiring Russian S-400 missile systems, Pentagon spokeswoman Michele Baldansa said. It should be noted that the US administration believes that it is important to maintain consistency between US weapons and the weapons of its allies, because this could threaten their interests.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Piskov gave no details on the delivery of the S-400 missile defense systems to Riyadh. "Such cooperation is not directed against any third party," Piskov said. "We consider the worrying statements by the Pentagon to be unnecessary."
But why is Russia arming Saudi Arabia, the main ally of the United States, and what Riyadh will offer Moscow to this deal?
The Russian defense industry has made significant financial and moral gains thanks to the S-400 missile defense systems. In the past, Russia has provided the S-300 missile defense system to Iran, and has signed contracts with Ankara on S-400 missile defense systems, and it is clearly Saudi's turn. According to the director of the Institute for Middle East and Caucasus Research of the International Institute, Stanislav Tarasov, this agreement will contribute to the expansion of military and technical cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Russia.
The newspaper spoke about the main reasons why Riyadh to buy Russian weapons. According to political expert Tarasov, "Riyadh is unlikely to attack Israel. As far as Iran is concerned, it seems that Riyadh is supporting Iranian efforts objectively in Syria, and a tactical alliance between Iran and Saudi Arabia is possible. " According to Tarasov, "if Moscow plays the role of mediator, it will be able to reduce the amount of contradictions between Riyadh and Tehran, and will promote the establishment of a tactical alliance."
"The purchase of Russian anti-aircraft missile defense systems by Turkey and Saudi Arabia at this time is a signal to the United States, an attempt to show how much Ankara and Riyadh are dissatisfied with Washington," Tarasov said.
The newspaper pointed to the arms deal concluded by US President Donald Trump during his visit to the Kingdom. According to Tarasov, each party has its own game and interests, and Russia's interest seems to be to succeed in expanding the foreign arms market and entering the balance of power in the Middle East.
To this end, Russia has been able to influence the Turks to change their attitude towards Bashar al-Assad, not to mention the existence of signs confirming the change of Saudi position on the Syrian scene. On the other hand, Ankara has begun to form an alliance with Tehran on the Syrian and Qatari issues. As a result, the Americans felt they were losing control of the region.
"The main players in the strategic game in the Middle East and the US allies in the region are starting to move toward Russia," Tarasov was quoted as saying. I think Trump's anti-Iran campaign will not be supported by Ankara and Riyadh. This means that Trump's attempt to establish an anti-Iranian coalition has completely failed. "
"Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and King Salman have already realized that it is better to build a partnership with Putin rather than with Trump," Tarasov said. Unlike the United States and the European Union, Russia will not manipulate Turkey's interests. "
"At the moment, a new system of relations has been reshaped in the Middle East," Tarasov said. As such, Russia has become the main player in the region, while the United States is suffering from a catastrophic failure. "
