Washington: We will follow closely the situation of Gaza after reconciliation Ffg-660x330

    Baghdad - Agencies
WASHINGTON - Washington will "closely monitor" the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip after the Egyptian-brokered Fatah-Hamas reconciliation deal, the State Department said on Tuesday.
"We welcome the effort of the Palestinian Authority to assume full responsibilities in Gaza," US State Department spokesman Heather Nuerte told reporters in Washington. "We will follow developments closely so that we can work with the Palestinian Authority, Israel and international donors to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza."
"We believe that (the agreement) could be an important step, for humanitarian access to those living there," she added.
Fatah and Hamas signed a reconciliation deal at the headquarters of the Egyptian intelligence in Cairo, aimed at ending a decade of divisions between the two sides, and set a deadline of two months to resolve the thorny issues.
The two sides agreed to hand over to the Palestinian Authority the administration of the Gaza Strip, which is currently under the authority of Hamas, by December 1, "maximum".
The round of talks between the two sides began in Cairo on Tuesday and was heavily secreted.
The visit comes after a visit by the Palestinian government headed by Rami al-Hamdallah last week to the Gaza Strip was the first since 2014, and aimed to emphasize the seriousness of the reconciliation efforts.
