MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's defense ministry on Thursday accused the United States of deploying an additional brigade in Poland in violation of an agreement signed between Moscow and NATO, a charge denied by the US embassy in Warsaw.
"The 3rd Armored Division was supposed to be replaced in Poland and in the Baltic countries by soldiers of the Second Armored Brigade of US Forces, so as not to violate the founding law between NATO and Russia, signed in 1997," the defense ministry said in a statement.
For his part, spokesman for the ministry Igor Konashnikov that "the second armored brigade of the United States arrived" to "Poland in a secret manner and deployed with his armored vehicles," instead of leaving the region.
"The military equipment of the third US Armored Corps remained at this time in Poland and in the Baltic states," Konashnikov said, adding that this meant that an additional brigade had been "deployed de facto" near the Russian border.
The US embassy in Warsaw denied the deployment of any new brigade, explaining in a statement that what is happening is the replacement of units deployed in the region
