The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, on Thursday approved an aid package worth some 60.4 million euros ($ 71.6 million) to support stability in Iraq after the return of areas controlled by the Da'ash organization.
"The new funding comes in addition to the various assistance provided by the European Union to Iraq, which has so far reached 4.60 million euros ($ 72.6 million) since the beginning of the crisis," the agency said in a statement.
"At this important juncture in the history of Iraq, we stand by the Iraqi people and the Iraqi authorities, who have shown courage and flexibility in their fight against a supporter," said EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Federica Mugherini.
"The European Union is present today more than ever before to help them build their future after we continue to work on the political, humanitarian, security and development aspects to help stabilize the liberated areas," she said.
"The restoration of Mosul and the other areas it controls is a first step towards peace and the EU continues to support the needs of millions of Iraqis and will not stop supporting it," EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Nevin Memika said.
