[rtl]The Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water, Cesar Abi Khalil, revealed that a consortium comprising Russian Novatech, Total and France's Eni, the only one to bid for oil and gas.[/rtl]
[rtl]In a statement, Abu Khalil said on Facebook that the consortium had made two offers for the fourth and ninth ads, and the deadline for submitting offers.[/rtl]
[rtl]Abu Khalil added that the results of the first licensing round were positive in that Lebanon succeeded in attracting international companies with extensive experience in the development and exploration of oil and gas and in the introduction of oil to international markets.[/rtl]
[rtl]The ninth concession lies along the border with the Israeli occupation entity, which Lebanon regards as an enemy state, including an unresolved border dispute over a three-square-mile sea area of about 860 square kilometers, along the edge of three of the five concessions.[/rtl]
[rtl]Lebanon is located in the Levant basin in the eastern Mediterranean, along with Cyprus, Egypt, Palestine and Syria. A number of gas fields have been discovered there since 2009, such as the Lothian and Tamar fields.[/rtl]
[rtl]The country re-launched the licensing round for five maritime concessions (1, 4, 8, 9 and 10) in January after a three-year delay due to political problems.[/rtl]
[rtl]Lebanon had extended the deadline for bids in September, because companies wanted more time and seen the long-awaited tax law on petroleum activities, the Petroleum Sector Administration said.[/rtl]
[rtl]Earlier this year, 51 companies qualified to bid in this round, according to the TRA.[/rtl]
[rtl]When the operation was first launched in 2013, 46 companies have qualified to participate, including 12 operators, including Chevron, Total and Exxon Mobil.[/rtl]
[rtl]The Petroleum Sector Authority will set up the bids and submit them to the Minister of Energy no later than November 13, before being considered by the Lebanese Council of Ministers for approval.[/rtl]
[rtl]It said the exploration phase would last for up to five years and could be extended for one year.[/rtl]
