    Egypt announced on Thursday the development of a military naval base overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the north of the country. 

    This came during the presence of Egyptian President, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, the activities of the celebration of the naval forces (21 October each year) held in the city of Alexandria (north), according to a statement of the presidency. 

    In his speech, Ahmed Khaled Hassan, Commander of the Egyptian Navy, reviewed efforts to develop the naval forces, including the development of the Alexandria naval base. 

    The development of the base included the introduction of new and sophisticated naval units to service, as well as joint exercises with a number of countries, according to Hassan.

    He stressed that "the development of the Egyptian naval forces enables them to carry out the tasks of maintaining Egypt's national security and protecting its maritime borders efficiently, in addition to carrying out the other tasks assigned to it outside the borders of the homeland, such as its participation in protecting the Bab al-Mandab Strait, . 

    Egypt has been involved in an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia since March 2015 against the Huthi group and the forces of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh in an effort to prevent the group and Saleh's forces from dominating the entire country after taking control of the capital and other areas by force of arms. 

    In turn, the Egyptian president raised the flag of his country on the Alexandria naval base after the development, and then inspected the new naval units that have recently joined the Egyptian navy, including two Mustral helicopters, a Jwend frigate and two German-made 209 submarines.

    Since Sisi's arrival in June 2014, Egypt has been witnessing an unprecedented interest in armaments. The armed forces have held a number of military deals with several countries, including Russia, France and Germany. 

    The Egyptian navy celebrates its anniversary on 21 October, which witnessed the dumping of the Israeli destroyer Eilat in 1967 during the war between the two countries.
