A diplomatic crisis has occurred between two Arab states over charges of trafficking in hashish.
According to a number of Moroccan media, Morocco summoned its ambassador to Algeria for consultations after the Algerian foreign minister accused Moroccan banks of "laundering the money of cannabis" in Africa.
The Moroccan foreign ministry also called the Chargé d'affaires of the Algerian embassy in Rabat and lodged a formal protest against the "very serious statements concerning the policies of the Kingdom of Morocco in Africa".
The latest crisis between Algeria and Morocco began after comments from Algeria's Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel at a meeting of heads of economic institutions in Algiers. "Everyone knows that Moroccan banks launder the money of cannabis. And that the airline does not only transport passengers. "
This came in the context of a debate on the high investment in Moroccan banks and their competition to Algerian banks.
The Moroccan foreign ministry said Messahel said "a large level of irresponsibility is unprecedented in the history of bilateral relations between the two countries, which shows ignorance of the basic rules of the banking system and the Moroccan airline."
