A Pakistani court on Thursday issued an arrest warrant against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over corruption cases uncovered after the Panama scandal, putting more pressure on his ruling party ahead of general elections next year.
His lawyer, Dhafer Khan, said: "The court of accountability issued today arrest warrants with the possibility of bail on the former prime minister in two cases on charges of corruption."
In late July, the Supreme Court dismissed Sharif after investigations into charges of corruption against his family, making him the 15th prime minister since independence of Pakistan 70 years ago, which is sacked before the end of his term.
And prevented him from holding public office, effectively depriving him of running in the general elections scheduled for the end of next year. Experts have warned that his ruling party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz wing, could lose seats in the election because of the scandal.
