US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Thursday that Iraq must stand in the face of Iranian influence, recognizing that the two countries share long borders and legitimate economic interests.
Journalists in Geneva Tilerson, who held talks in Baghdad this week with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, asked to counter Iranian influence. "What we say to the Iraqis is that you have to develop the ability to rely on yourselves," he said.
He said the United States remained deeply concerned about the fighting between Iraqi security forces and Kurdish Peshmerga forces after the Kurdish referendum on independence.
He added that Washington "is disappointed by the inability of the parties to reach a peaceful solution completely" and encouraged Abadi to "accept the initiatives of Erbil for talks on the basis of the Iraqi constitution."
The Kurdistan Regional Government has submitted several initiatives, the latest of which was the freezing of the results of the referendum and the entry into dialogue according to the Constitution with the cessation of military movements.
However, Prime Minister Haider Abadi rejected the initiative during his visit to Iran, and called for the cancellation of the results of the referendum.
