agreed on the deployment of US strategic weapons in South Korea according to regular deployment. The defense ministers of South Korea and the United States on Saturday confirmed their plans "to promote the periodic deployment of strategic weapons of America on and around the peninsula." For South Korea, US strategic assets usually mean advanced weapons systems such as bombers, aircraft carriers and nuclear-powered submarines.

The two sides stressed "the need to continue to strengthen joint exercises and training activities and enhance joint capabilities in preparation for any provocations of North Korea near the vicinity of the north-west of the peninsula and the northern border line."

The Pentagon chief warned North Korea would be defeated by a "large-scale military response" if it attacked its country or its allies and that "any use of nuclear weapons would face a large-scale military response."

"I can not imagine a condition under which the United States can accept North Korea as a nuclear power," Matisse said.
