French Prime Minister Eduard Philippe announced on Friday his government's agreement to hold a referendum on the independence of New Caledonia next year.
"A political agreement between the French government and members of the commission signed on the independence of New Caledonia gives the island the right to hold a referendum on independence by the end of November 2018," he said.

"The independence referendum is in line with the terms of the Caledonian agreement signed in May 1998 and will end French colonialism in a sequential way to the Pacific archipelago," Philippe said in a press statement.

"We have reached a political agreement based on trust, and it is important that we still have some work that is not difficult," he said.

It is noteworthy that the Committee signed the independence of Caledonia was established under the agreement of May 1998, between the French government and the supporters of independence on the island for a transitional period of 20 years.

Under the 1998 Nouméa Accord, New Caledonia is entitled to hold a second referendum between 2014 and 2018, the year in which the agreement expires.

New Caledonia is located in the South-West Pacific, within the "Oceania" continent of some 10,000 volcanic and coral islands, with the exception of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
