[ltr]WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald H. Trump announced a strategic border with North Korea, while Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed Tokyo's intention to impose additional sanctions on Pyongyang.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Look at what happened after 25 years of soft talks, see where we are now," Trump told a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Monday.[/ltr]
[ltr]Trump recalled his meetings with members of Japanese families kidnapped by North Korean authorities and the death of US student Otto Warmer, who was held in North Korea, as examples of the need to act more aggressively toward Pyongyang.[/ltr]
[ltr]Trump Kim Jong-un called for the release of the hostages held by North Korea, saying that their release would be a first step to resolve the situation.[/ltr]
[ltr]The president said he regarded North Koreans as a great people who had fallen under the oppression of the system of excessive repression and expressed hope that all difficulties would be overcome, because that would be better for everyone, especially for North Korea.[/ltr]
[ltr]Shinzo Abe said that Japan and the United States are acting in full compliance with the measures to be taken against North Korea, noting that it is not yet time for direct negotiations with Pyongyang.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Japanese prime minister stressed that all options on North Korea were on the table.[/ltr]
[ltr]"For more than 20 years, the international community has tried to establish a dialogue with North Korea," Abe said. "Now is the time for dialogue, but to make every effort to pressure North Korea."[/ltr]
[ltr]The Japanese prime minister said that Tokyo plans to impose additional sanctions on Pyongyang, which will include freezing the financial assets of 35 people and entities from North Korea.[/ltr]
