The church priest in Texas, scene of the worst mass murder in the United States, recently expressed his desire to tear down the building and set up a memorial to the victims, the official said.
The priest, Frank Pomeroy, whose daughter Annabel, 14, was among the victims in the Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, expressed his wish to the officials of the National Church earlier this week, AFP reported.
Robert Oldham, a member of the Southern Baptist Synod, said there was "an emotional and physical impossibility" to go back to any mass in the small rural church itself.
"The church has not yet made a decision," he said, adding that "the pastor was a bit of a figment of what he thought would be the best for the southern Baptist complex.
The deacon, a church official who visited him on Tuesday, asked for a church to be built elsewhere.
Pomeroy was traveling when Devin Patrick Kelly, 26, fired a semiautomatic machine gun at worshipers at the Sutherland Spring church on Sunday, killing 26 people and wounding 20 others before committing suicide by shooting himself.
