Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday expressed hope that progress could be made in working on a peace treaty between Japan and Russia.

"Taking into account the results of these events, I would like to push forward our work in the future in order to reach a peace treaty," Abe said during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Danang, Vietnam.

"I would like next year to be a good year to promote mutual understanding between our people."

Abe reminded Putin of the first flight by Japanese nationals recently to the four southern Kuril islands to visit the graves of their relatives and review sites of joint economic activities there.
