[ltr]New York Times: Saudi Arabia has asked Israel to attack Lebanon[/ltr]

[ltr]Lebanon, a pacifist country that has avoided Middle East conflicts following the Arab Spring in 2011, is now under threat as the Trump administration, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies turn their attention to Hezbollah and its patronage of Iran.[/ltr]
[ltr]A question posed by the New York Times in its report, noting that they see the targeting of Hezbollah, one of Iran's most effective allies, a way to find a common cause with Washington. US President Donald Trump points to Iran's support for Hezbollah and other groups Washington believes are terrorist groups.[/ltr]
[ltr]Saudi Arabia has been stretched too far and exhausted. Its war with the Huthi rebels in Yemen continues, and the diplomatic row with Qatar is also deadlocked.[/ltr]
[ltr]If Saudi leaders believe they can win an easy victory in Lebanon against Hezbollah, it "will become another misjudgment that complicates the dangerous and volatile moment in the Middle East."[/ltr]
[ltr]Saudi Arabia's new ruler, King Salman, and his son and heir apparent, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, are pursuing "a more aggressive foreign policy than former Saudi rulers."[/ltr]
[ltr]"Trump's support for the kingdom in its struggle with Iran has encouraged them to do so, and now that Iran's ally, Assad, has almost won the civil war in Syria, Saudi Arabia is looking to contain Iran's influence elsewhere.[/ltr]
[ltr]According to analysts and officials in the region, "the tension that has clearly emerged in the region over the past week has been compounded by growing concern about what appears to be a volatile structure: a young and arrogant Saudi leader who is helping to ward off threats to counter Iran's escalating influence, Which indicates its agreement with Saudi policy. "[/ltr]
[ltr]The New York Times reports that Saudi Arabia, sunk in a war with Yemen, will not start another war on its own. But Israel, which fought a war with Hezbollah in 2006, has expressed mounting concerns about the growing number of Hezbollah arms arsenals on its northern border.[/ltr]
[ltr]On Friday, 10 November, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said Saudi Arabia had asked Israel to attack Lebanon after it had abducted Saad Hariri.[/ltr]
[ltr]"I am not talking here about an analysis of the situation, but about information: the Saudis have asked Israel to attack Lebanon," he said.[/ltr]
[ltr]But many Israelis fear that hostile actions by the Saudi crown prince could drag Israel into a war it does not want to fight.[/ltr]
[ltr]The New York Times says there are no signs of a war in Israel. Israel does not move its forces on its northern border and does not employ reserve forces, and in no way has Netanyahu indicated that he sees the conflict imminent.[/ltr]
[ltr]On the other hand, the newspaper believes that Hezbollah is also not eager to enter that battle[/ltr]
