An Iraqi source close to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Tuesday that Baghdad would apologize for receiving Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on his visit during the month of November.
"Abadi is an invitation to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his last visit to Saudi Arabia last month, and it was agreed that the visit would be at the beginning of this month," Jassim Jafar told Saudi media.
"Recent events in Saudi Arabia and the region, the Lebanon issue and the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri have complicated things. It has become difficult for Iraq to receive a person who could cause damage in the future because of the problem between Saudi Arabia and Iran."
He added that "Iraq wants to remain independent and not party to the place of another party, it has become natural that the time of visit is not appropriate now, only after seeing the results of what is happening in the region."
He stressed that "the postponement inevitably will be from the Iraqi side, because Iraq can not receive a person who wants to escalate with Iran and Hezbollah and the parties even inside Iraq."
The relations between Iraq and Saudi Arabia have recently witnessed an official movement, after the visit of Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubair to Baghdad, followed by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi, two visits to Saudi Arabia during which he met with King Salman.
