The US military revealed for the first time the data of each base alone on sexual assault reports, showing a higher number of communications in large military installations such as the Norfolk naval base in Virginia as well as centers abroad such as South Korea.
It is believed that sexual abuse in the army, which is defined as anything from touching to rape, is far higher than the number of reports.
The Pentagon said it estimated that by 2016 less than a third of service personnel who had been sexually assaulted had been reported.
The ministry said this represented an improvement in reporting of previous years, Reuters reported.
According to recent data, there are 211 reports of sexual assault by a group of US bases in South Korea, while there are 270 reports of sexual assault from Norfolk.
This represents a slight decrease from 291 cases in Norfolk in 2015.
The Ministry did not elaborate on the data, but indicated that the communications showed where the victim had been informed of a sexual assault and not necessarily where the sexual assault occurred.
Sexual assault reports included other major rules in 2016: 199 from Fort Hood, Texas, 187 from a naval base in San Diego, California, 169 from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and 157 from Camp Pendleton, California and 146 communications from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The US military said it believed the semi-annual, non-name survey provided more accurate estimates of the number of sexual assaults.
According to the latest survey, 14,900 service personnel were subjected to a type of sexual abuse in 2016, down from 20,300 in 2014. 1
