    [ltr]Baghdad Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]Independent MP Shorouq Abayji said that the announcement of the parliament's presidency to return the amendment of the personal status law to the Committee on Women, Family and Childhood is to save face and not to admit that the vote to proceed with the law was not true and that the majority was against passing it.[/ltr]
[ltr]Abayiji said in a statement to Mawazin News that "because of the strong campaign against the draft amendment of the Personal Status Law and the great solidarity that happened with us and the civil and popular protests and even the international put the presidency of the parliament in an awkward position."[/ltr]
[ltr]"This announcement from the presidency and a proposal from the legal committee to return the law to the committee on women, family and childhood is a face-saving because they do not want to admit that the vote to proceed with the law was not true and the majority was against passing it."[/ltr]
[ltr]"This is the main reason why he did not put it to vote again within the barbarians," said Abayji, one of the leaders of the civil movement. "In order not to make clear their announcement of the result of the vote is incorrect because the majority of the political blocs issued statements to confirm their position rejecting the draft amendment submitted, Which is a massive bloc that submitted the project at the expense of democracy and the Constitution declares to international bodies that it is against the draft amendment of the Personal Status Law. "[/ltr]
[ltr]"It is important that we stop passing the project by any means and the battle is definitely going on," she said.[/ltr]
[ltr]The campaign to reject the amendment of the Iraqi Personal Status Law, which aims to regulate marriage contracts in accordance with the Sharia, has escalated and civil groups have demonstrated to reject the draft, while the UN mission called for comprehensive and extensive consultations. Coinciding with this escalation.[/ltr]
[ltr]Hundreds of activists in the capital Baghdad and several provinces, including Basra and Diwaniyah, staged protests against initial approval of the personal status law by parliament. The participants carried banners with names denouncing the initial approval of the law, including "Our daughters are not a commodity, I got married and I am a minor." The demonstration was attended by children and girls carrying signs reading "Is it possible to marry a year from now?"[/ltr]
[ltr]The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) called for broad and comprehensive consultations on these amendments to draft the Iraqi Personal Status Law with a view to ensuring full respect for women's rights, stressing the urgent need to develop legal and institutional strategies to eliminate discrimination against women and girls.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Iraqi Bar Association called on the parliament to withdraw the proposed personal status law, stressing that it "enshrines sectarian identity at the expense of the principles of citizenship."[/ltr]
[ltr]Britain has called on Iraqi lawmakers to reject proposed changes to the personal status law that "would reduce the legal age of marriage in Iraq to nine years." A spokesman for the British Embassy in Baghdad said in a press statement that "allowing different groups to legislate in accordance with their own legislation would reduce the marriage age of some girls in Iraq to nine years."[/ltr]
