The United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced Monday that it has received a donation of 23 million dollars for Iraqi children from Germany on the occasion of International Children's Day.

The news agency quoted UNICEF representative in Iraq Peter Hawkins as saying that the organization was receiving the money to help provide educational opportunities and safe drinking water to hundreds of thousands of displaced children in Iraq.

The UN official confirmed that the funds will be directed towards providing educational services to more than 265,000 Iraqi children who have missed their educational opportunities for one year or more because of the fighting against terrorist gangs.

The German ambassador to Iraq, Dr. Cyril Nan, expressed his deep sympathy for the children of Iraq who have been subjected to "violence, kidnapping, injury and sometimes murder without the possibility of escape from the cycle of violence and despair on their own," stressing the pleasure of the German government to provide some of the Assistance to UN efforts to provide basic needs for these children.
