[ltr]Saudi Arabia has agreed to buy precision-guided munitions from US defense companies worth about $ 7 billion in a deal that some lawmakers may object to the contribution of US-made weapons to civilian deaths during the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen, informed sources said on Thursday.[/ltr]
[ltr]The two companies, Raytheon and Boeing, were part of a deal to buy $ 110 billion worth of weapons, which coincided with President Donald Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia in May, the sources said.[/ltr]
[ltr]Arms sales to Saudi Arabia and other GCC member states have become a controversial issue within the US Congress, which must approve these deals.[/ltr]
[ltr]The US State Department has not yet officially notified Congress about the precision-guided munitions deal.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The US government will take into account factors such as regional balance and human rights and the impact on the US defense industry base," said a State Department official. "We do not comment to confirm or deny sales until Congress is officially notified."[/ltr]
[ltr]The war in Yemen puts the Huthis in the face of the Saudi-backed coalition-led government. Last March, the United Nations said some 4,800 civilians had been killed since March 2015.[/ltr]
[ltr]Saudi Arabia has denied attacks or indicated there were fighters in the areas it had targeted and said it had tried to reduce civilian casualties.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Saudi ambassador to Washington, Prince Khalid bin Salman, declined to comment on the deal, but said in a statement Riyadh would implement the agreements signed during the Trump visit.[/ltr]
[ltr]He said that while the kingdom had always chosen the United States to buy weapons, the choice of the Saudi market remains an option and is committed to defending its security.[/ltr]
[ltr]Tramp, a Republican, who sees arms sales as a means of creating jobs in the United States, has announced multi-billion dollar arms sales since he took office in January. A US government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the deal had been put in place for a period of 10 years and that actual arms delivery could take years.[/ltr]
[ltr]Congress may block the deal, with Republican Rep. Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced in June that he would stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other Gulf Cooperation Council members because of the dispute with Qatar, another US ally in the Gulf region.
