US official: Trump may declare Jerusalem as the capital of "Israel" Wednesday
Follow-up / Sky Press:
A US official predicted that President Donald Trump will declare the occupied city of Jerusalem as the capital of "Israel" next Wednesday, in a move that could change US policy for decades and fuel tensions in the Middle East.
The US official said on Friday that Trump may make the controversial announcement in a speech to be delivered on Wednesday, although "has not been resolved yet."
The expected recognition comes despite the possibility of postponing Trump again the promise made during his campaign to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The State Department said on Friday that President Donald Trump had not yet decided on the transfer of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, while US officials confirmed that Washington's recognition of occupied Jerusalem as the capital of the occupying power may be issued soon.
If he recognizes occupied Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Trump will end a decades-old US policy that will boost tensions in the Middle East, with unacceptable consequences for the Palestinians.
"I can tell you that no decision has been reached yet," State Department spokeswoman Heather Naort said.
Naourt confirmed that the report to the Congress Trump decision on the transfer of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is still in front of him until next Monday (4 December 2017).
In 2002, Congress passed a bill to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but former President George W. Bush suspended the legislation.
At the time, Bush considered foreign affairs to be the executive power of the president and his administration, and then US presidents had to sign a six-month moratorium.
The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman confirmed that Foreign Secretary Rex Tilerson, spoke to Trump on this matter, noting that "no decision has been reached yet."
The newspaper "Hearts" Hebrew said on Thursday that Trump "intends to sign a decision to postpone the decision to transfer the embassy to Jerusalem, for the second time since taking office early this year."
The newspaper, which based its information on American press reports, pointed out that the postponement decision "will be accompanied by a letter recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel." The newspaper did not specify the date for the signing of the postponement.
During his campaign, Trump promised more than once to move his embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, US officials said Trump was considering a plan to declare occupied Jerusalem the capital of "Israel", thus taking a course contrary to his predecessors' commitment and undermining his newborn administration's bid to resume long-stalled peace talks.
One of the other options considered by Trump is to instruct his aides to develop a long-term plan for the transfer of the embassy, making his intention to do so clear, one official said.
But the Reuters news agency quoted warnings from unnamed US officials that the plan was not yet complete and that Trump might change parts of it.
Jerusalem, occupied in 1976, is one of the main obstacles to peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Arab leaders have long warned President Trump not to recognize it as the capital of the occupation.
In a related development, the State Department spokeswoman said that her country "informed the PLO office in Washington, DC, to limit their activities in matters related to achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians only."
"We are actively involved in restarting what we consider to be substantive Israeli-Palestinian negotiations."
"The parties to the negotiations, both Israeli and Palestinian, are cooperating and dialogue with them, and we think they are ready to participate in the negotiations," Narout said.
This came after days of tension in the relations that resulted from Washington's reporting to the PLO the need to close its office in Washington, in implementation of a law passed by Congress in 2016.
