The Arab League on Saturday expressed its deep concern over reports that the US administration intends to transfer the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognize it as the capital of Israel.
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit told reporters today that "the Arab League is following up the matter with all its minute details, because if it happens, it will have very important implications not only for the political situation, but also for the security and stability in the region and the world."
"It is unfortunate that some insist on trying to accomplish this step without the slightest attention to the great risks it poses to the stability of the Middle East and the world as a whole."
"We have already encouraged the US administration in its efforts to resume the path of a political settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but taking such action is unjustified and will not serve peace or stability. It will fuel extremism and violence, benefiting only one side, the Israeli government, .
He pointed to "the existence of contacts with the Palestinian government and the Arab countries to coordinate the Arab position on any development in this regard."
