Drought in Dhi Qar drives marsh dwellers to drink contaminated water

     Dhi Qar / Hussein al-Amel

The Higher Executive Committee of the Marshlands and Antiquities in the province of Dhi Qar warned that the federal government and the Ministry of Water Resources ignored the demands of the Marshlands residents to address the water crisis, stressing that their patience has run out and that the Marshlands are not suitable for human use as well as other uses.
"The Marshlands are facing a terrible drought caused by the lack of water releases in the winter season, in which we expected an increase in water releases to meet the shortage of water," said Hassan al-Asadi, vice-chairman of the executive committee of the marshlands and conservation in the province.
Al-Asadi explained that "the areas of the marshes were exposed to water shortages during the summer of last year as a result of the plan to grow alklab in the province of Najaf (unthought), which consumed large amounts of water, as well as high temperatures in the season mentioned."
"As the causes of scarcity in the marshes in the current winter are due to the lack of water releases from the upstream countries and beyond the provinces of Wasit, Najaf, Diwaniyah and Muthanna on the planned quotas for the province and the Ministry of Water Resources approval of a winter agricultural plan estimated at more than four million acres throughout Iraq Despite the lack of water releases and decrease by a large percentage these days, especially in the areas of the Marshlands. "
The Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Executive Committee of the marshes and archeology warned of the continued disregard of the central government and the Ministry of Water Resources for the population of the marshes, pointing out "the interest of government agencies in the agricultural plan only without thinking to deliver the amounts of water planned for the marshes."
He noted that "the patience of the Marsh population has been implemented and that the waters of the Marshlands are not suitable for human use as well as other uses."
"The local government in Dhi Qar will not abandon the inhabitants of the marshes and will stand against anyone who tries to harm them," Assadi said, referring to "the approach of the Prime Minister and the House of Representatives to intervene to save them from the disaster of the water crisis and to develop real solutions to them."
The administration of Dhi Qar province called earlier Prime Minister Haider Abadi to intervene urgently to regulate the distribution of water and reduce the excesses of other provinces on the water quota of the province, and stressed that the water crisis caused a great tragedy for the local people as a result of the suspension of complexes and projects to clean drinking water, A humanitarian disaster that threatens life in the province and warns of an environmental, economic and commercial crisis.
Hundreds of peasants from the province of Dhi Qar demonstrated on Tuesday (November 21, 2017) in front of the governorate building to demand the treatment of the escalating water crisis that caused them to be deprived of their land during the winter agricultural season. Urgent to save them from thirst.
On November 8, 2017, the local government in Dhi Qar province threatened to sue the Ministry of Water Resources and Wasit Governorate against the backdrop of the water shortage crisis and over water quotas.
It is noteworthy that the Higher Agricultural Committee in Dhi Qar, expressed its objection on 2 October 2017 to reduce its agricultural plan for the winter season for more than 20 percent under the pretext of water scarcity, while warned the agricultural associations to exacerbate tribal conflicts in the province and its impact on the agricultural season as a result of many Overflows on rivers and streams. The Marshlands comprise five districts of Dhi Qar province, centered in Nasiriyah, and are divided into 10 administrative units out of 20 which are located in the governorate. In the early 1990s, the area of the Nasiriyah marshes is estimated to be 1 million and 48,000 dunums. In 2003 about 50 percent of the total area of the Marshlands of Nasiriyah.
