    [ltr]WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Rumsfeld said Wednesday that the United States recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in a landmark resolution that turns decades of US policy and fears a new wave of violence in the Middle East.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The resolution raised a wave of denunciations expressed by the PLO, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, France and the UN secretary-general.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Trump ordered the start of preparations for the transfer of the US embassy to Jerusalem, a move that US presidents have been dragging since 1995, when Congress recognized that Jerusalem was the capital of Israel and issued a binding decision to transfer the embassy.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Foreign Minister Rex Tillerson said the implementation of the resolution would begin "immediately."[/ltr]
    [ltr]"It is time to formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Trump said in a White House address, adding that he had ordered the State Department to begin preparations to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The resolution reflected a "new approach" to the Arab-Israeli conflict.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Trump is thus ignoring all international and Arab warnings of the consequences of this decision and its possible repercussions on the region.[/ltr]
    [ltr]He promised to do his utmost to fulfill his country's commitment to reach a peace agreement between the Palestinians and the Israelis, stressing that the United States supports a "two-state solution."[/ltr]
    [ltr]He also called for "calm" and "tolerance", adding that his deputy Mike Pence would travel to the Middle East "within the next few days."[/ltr]
