The White House warned the Palestinian Authority not to cancel a meeting with US Vice President Mike Bens later this month in response to President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
"A step like this would be counterproductive," the White House said.
Jibril Rajoub, a member of Fatah's central committee, said Bens, who is on a tour of the region, is not welcome.
White House warnings come as clashes in the West Bank and Gaza Strip continue between Palestinian protesters and Israeli troops.
The Trump Declaration was met with widespread anger in the world after it changed the decades-old policy on the sensitive issue, especially from America's traditional allies, Britain, France and Saudi Arabia.
Dozens of Palestinians are reported to have been injured in protests against the Trump decision on Jerusalem.
Most injuries in the West Bank were caused by tear gas and rubber bullets, but at least one person was hit by live bullets.
Israel has deployed hundreds of additional troops in the West Bank.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad called for "public outcry and outrage" after Friday prayers.
The head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, called for a "new intifada" in response to the Trump Declaration.
Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip are engaged in a general strike that includes all life facilities in the Palestinian territories and three days of protests.
Commercial shops and private and public institutions were closed, and the streets seemed empty of pedestrians.
Palestinian universities and schools also announced, the general strike.
Trump announced last Wednesday that the United States recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, calling it a "very late step" to advance the Middle East peace process and work towards a permanent agreement.
Trump stressed at the same time that the United States supports the two-state solution if approved by Israelis and Palestinians.
Trump asked the State Department to begin preparations for the transfer of the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
