Trend Press - Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Saturday it was fully committed to a mid-term nuclear arms treaty with the United States during the Cold War and banning medium-range cruise missiles, a day after Washington accused Moscow of violating the treaty.
The State Department said on Friday Washington was reviewing military options, including new medium-range cruise missile systems, in response to what it said was Russia's current violation of the 1987 treaty.
The warning was the first reaction from the administration of US President Donald Trump to US accusations that first emerged in 2014, claiming Russia had deployed a ground-launched cruise missile in violation of the treaty's ban on testing and deploying missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the allegations were "baseless at all."
Ryabkov reiterated previous Russian statements that Moscow was fully committed to the treaty and had remained firmly committed to it and was ready to continue to do so.
"But if the other side does not comply, we will have to reciprocate," Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a written statement. The US claim has increased tension between Moscow and Washington and the State Department on Friday pointed to possible economic sanctions on the issue.
Washington has imposed sanctions on Russian entities and individuals close to Putin after Moscow annexed the Crimea, which was part of Ukraine, in 2014 and because of allegations of interference in the US presidential election last year. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied interference in the elections.
"Attempts to intimidate us with sanctions," Ryabkov said, were laughable.
"It is time for American politicians and diplomats to understand that economic and military pressure on Russia will not work." C
