US Ambassador: We will face the Iranian influence in Iraq after the stage of urging

     Translation / Hamid Ahmed

The US ambassador in Iraq says the United States is seeking to stand up to Iran's influence and help the federal government resolve its differences with the Kurdistan region.
The US ambassador to Iraq, Douglas Seelman, took office in Baghdad in September 2016, only a few weeks before the start of military operations to liberate the city of Mosul.
With the expulsion of an al-Qaeda organization from all the territories it occupied and the declaration of Iraq without any justification, the US ambassador says that Washington is now focusing its efforts on maintaining peace and continuing reconstruction and considers Iran's influence in Iraq a problem. "Simply, Iran does not respect the sovereignty of its neighbors."
"The Iranians have helped the Iraqi government in its war against Saddam and to defeat it to some extent, but I frankly did not find the Iranians donate funds for humanitarian aid, and I did not find them contribute to the United Nations programs to support stability in Iraq."
When an organization raided large land in northern and central Iraq in the summer of 2014, Iranian-backed Shiite factions mobilized to defend the country, providing a defensive effort in many areas, while the armed forces were rebuilding their ranks.
Now the popular crowd, backed by the state, has tens of thousands of fighters spread across the country. The victories against Dahesh made the leaders of these armed factions very influential.
The Trump administration had called for the dissolution of the crowd after the war was over. It also warned that it would take a tougher stance with Iran by threatening to withdraw the United States from the nuclear deal signed with it in 2015 and impose sanctions on Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards.
Meanwhile, Iraq is looking for external reconstruction aid after the war, which the government says has caused damage and damage to the liberated cities estimated at $ 100 billion. Months after the end of military operations, there are still nearly three million displaced Iraqis. Trump said the $ 14.3 billion military campaign against Dahesh could not be replaced by a similar amount to fund reconstruction efforts in Iraq, where international aid organizations now turned their attention to rich Gulf countries rather than the United States.
"Iraq is now emerging from a difficult phase in which there has been a lot of economic damage and a lot of social rupture. We think it is important for Iraq to have positive relations with all its neighbors, and that Iran is also involved," Ambassador Silliman said.
"The United States is optimistic about Iraq's recent efforts to reach out to Saudi Arabia and Jordan," the US ambassador said. "They are allies that Washington hopes will play a bigger role in the country that is seeking to move forward."
The United States also hopes to help ease tensions between the central government and the Kurdistan region following a referendum on independence in September that was rejected by Baghdad.
"The relatively modest role we play is helping the parties find ways to move forward through the door of dialogue and negotiations," says Sulliman.
"At a time when the parties support the idea of discussions and dialogue, any commissioners to end this crisis has not yet begun between them," the US ambassador said.
