Two lawmakers have submitted a bill to impose new sanctions on Iran for its destructive role in destabilizing Yemen by supporting al-Houthi militias, the US newspaper The Hill reported.

"The project was presented by Republican Rep. Elena Rose Lehtinen of Florida and Senator Ted Bo of Texas to impose sanctions on Iran because of instability in Yemen by supporting and sponsoring the Houthi militias," the report said.

"It is necessary to hold the Iranians accountable for the unrest and the ongoing war in Yemen," Ted Bo said in a statement.

The bill sends a clear message to Tehran that it can either halt its activities or go to the option of imposing new sanctions.

The bill came as the US Congress is about to vote on a tough law against Iran for "financing terrorism" this week.

Last October, Congress passed a bill imposing sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program and supporting Lebanese Hezbollah.
