"The ministry's strategy is aimed at ending overcrowding in prisons and in conformity with human rights principles," Justice Minister Haider al-Zamili said.
"Zamili opened on Friday the expansion of the new buildings in the central Nasiriyah prison, which has a capacity of up to 3000 inmates, as part of the ministry's strategy to strengthen infrastructure and eliminate overcrowding in prisons," the ministry said in a statement.
"The new buildings in Nasiriyah Central Prison have two buildings according to the system of the cell and four buildings according to the hall system, so the total expansion will be six buildings that also contain a guest rehabilitation school, a health center and a special building for the kitchen, reception halls and other rooms for confrontation," the statement said.
