[ltr]WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump's team accused the independent investigator charged with interfering in the US presidential election with tens of thousands of "illegal" emails, US media reported Sunday.[/ltr]
[ltr]In a letter to congressional committees, attorney Corey Langover said a federal agency, the Public Services Department, had illegally issued special material, including private talks on which independent prosecutor Robert Mueller had relied, as part of an investigation into the Russian intervention in the 2016 election, "Axios" news.[/ltr]
[ltr]The accusations by Langover, who represents Trump's transition team, are a new step taken by Republicans to question the credibility of Muller's investigation, which has so far led to the indictment of Michael Flynn, a former national security adviser to Trump, and three people linked to his campaign.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The Public Service Department has received tens of thousands of e-mails, including a large number of special materials," he said, according to a copy of the letter published in Politico.[/ltr]
[ltr]The letter also stated that Mueller should have been granted permission to obtain these materials, and that the incident constituted a violation of the presidential transition.[/ltr]
[ltr]"When we received the e-mails during our criminal investigation, we got the accountant's consent, with respect for the appropriate criminal mechanism," spokesman Peter Carr said.[/ltr]
[ltr]California's Democratic Sen. Eric Swallow criticized the charges against Muller and wrote on Twitter: "This is another attempt to discredit Mueller as his investigations into the Russian file reach a sensitive stage."[/ltr]
[ltr]Some Republicans called for a second independent investigator.[/ltr]
[ltr]In addition to investigating the complicity of Trump's campaign with Russia, Muller is also investigating possible obstruction of justice, after Trump dismissed FBI director James Komi.[/ltr]
[ltr]Trump denies any collusion between his election campaign and Russia[/ltr]
