The Philippine Foreign Affairs Department has decided to resolve the crisis of its stranded workers in Iraq by arranging an arrangement that will guarantee their return after the Christmas holiday in their country.
About 1,000 Filipino workers are employed in several areas of Iraq, concentrated in Baghdad, Basra and the Kurdistan Region.
Those in Iraq will be allowed to return home, ensuring that they will not lose their jobs.
Workers in Iraq are subject to temporary residence. According to the newspaper "Manila Times" they will return to the same employer abroad with the entry into force of the employment contract.
At least thousands of Filipinos working in Iraq have been unable to return home since 2014 when Manila placed Iraq under a fourth-class crisis.
The Defense Ministry also suspended the deployment of new workers to Iraq after the Islamic state seized Mosul and other major cities and threatened to bypass Baghdad and Erbil.
"After more than three years of waiting, our citizens in Iraq will be reunited with their families without worrying that they will not be able to return to their jobs there," Foreign Minister Peter Kaitano said in a statement.
He said the arrangement was based largely on humanitarian foundations.
"This resolution does not lift the current ban on the deployment of new workers and will not reduce the current level of preparedness for Iraq according to the advice and assessment team of the Bureau of Migrant Workers Affairs and the Middle East and Africa Office," he said.
The charge d'affaires at the embassy in Baghdad, Mir Kato, said the exemption would benefit Filipinos who work and live in safe compounds such as the provinces of Babel, Baghdad, Basra, Dhi Qar, Karbala, Maysan, Muthanna, Najaf, Qadisiyah, Salahuddin and Wasit.
