    [ltr]Canada announced that the Venezuelan ambassador was no longer welcome, and the chargé d'affaires a "persona non grata" in response to the expulsion of Caracas two days ago by the Canadian chargé d'affaires.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Caracas withdrew its ambassador to Canada to protest Ottawa's sanctions against Venezuelan officials involved in corruption and human rights abuses in a country plagued by political and economic crises.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"The Venezuelan ambassador is no longer welcome in Canada," Canadian Foreign Minister Christia Freeland said in a statement. "The Venezuelan charge d'affaires is also an undesirable person."[/ltr]
    [ltr]Freeland said the expulsion of Canadian chargé d'affaires Craig Qualic two days ago "completely reflects the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who continues to undermine efforts to restore democracy and help the Venezuelan people."[/ltr]
    [ltr]"The Canadians will not remain idle while the Venezuelan government deprives its people of their democratic rights and fundamental human rights and refuses to receive basic humanitarian assistance," she said.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Canada has stepped up its address to President Nicolas Maduro and his government, urging him to engage with the opposition and imposing economic sanctions on his country.[/ltr]
    [ltr]For her part, the President of the Constituent Assembly of Venezuela, Dilse Rodriguez, charged the Chargé d'Affaires of Canada with his "permanent, urgent and clear interference in the internal affairs of her country".[/ltr]
