The UN Security Council presidency responded to the request of the United States for an emergency session to discuss developments in the current situation in Iran.
This was stated in an e-mail sent to reporters by the Office of the President of the Council, Ambassador Kiraat Umarov, representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the work of the Security Council for the month of December.
In the letter, the Bureau announced the convening of the emergency meeting on the Middle East, at the request of the United States, on Friday afternoon.
The United Nations diplomats said Thursday that Washington formally asked the President of the Council to convene an emergency session to discuss the current situation in Iran.
Iran is witnessing demonstrations that began in the cities of Mashhad and Kashmir (northeast); in protest against the high cost of living, before turning later to demonstrations that adopt political slogans.
