US Defense Secretary James Matisse said that Iran has failed to remove the anger of the Iranian people, pointing out that the United States has no problem with the Iranian people.

"The problem of his country is with the Iranian dictatorial regime," Matisse said in a statement on Sky News television. "A large part of the Iranian people has a problem with this regime, too," he said.

He added that the Iranian regime succeeded in suppressing the Green Revolution years ago, but failed to remove the dissatisfaction and anger of the people.

The State Department had earlier confirmed its intention to hold Iranian officials accountable for the arrest or killing of demonstrators during the suppression of the current protests against corruption, stressing that these "will not be forgotten."

In recent days, popular protests have erupted in Iran against a backdrop of social and economic developments and political dimensions with anti-regime slogans, punctuated by violence in which at least 21 people were killed in clashes between demonstrators and Iranian security forces.
