[ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]31 people have been killed in the past 48 hours in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, bordering the United States, which is experiencing a new wave of violence linked to drug trafficking, the prosecutor's office said on Saturday.[/ltr]
[ltr]Seven people were also shot dead on Thursday and Friday, the source said.[/ltr]
[ltr]Of the 31 killed, four are women and three are 14, 15 and 17.[/ltr]
[ltr]"This bloodbath is the result of a settling of accounts between rival groups of drug traffickers belonging to the Juarez cartel and another Sinaloa," spokesman Carlos Huerta told AFP.[/ltr]
[ltr]The states of Chihuahua, Sinaloa and Durango form the so-called Golden Triangle, areas that drug cartels are fighting for as they include areas for the cultivation of marijuana and opium, and also a smuggling route to the United States.[/ltr]
[ltr]Shortly before the wave of assassinations, Governor Javier Corral said at a security meeting that 2018 would be the "Year of Public Security in Chihuahua."[/ltr]
[ltr]The number of murders in Mexico between January and November 2017 was 23,011, the highest number since 1997 when the authorities began to count these crimes, according to statistics from the Federal Ministry of the Interior.[/ltr]
[ltr]Since former President Felipe Calderon (2006-2012) launched his war on drug traffickers with the help of the military, violence has increased sharply in Mexico.[/ltr]
[ltr]The military operation allowed the Mexican authorities to arrest leaders of several drug cartels but also led to the dispersal of criminal groups and the proliferation of violence in the country, experts said.[/ltr]
