The first inter-Korean official conversation began more than two years ago, according to the South Korean Unification Ministry.

A spokesman for the ministry told reporters that the talks in Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone between the two parts of the peninsula began at 10:00 a.m. local time an announcement by the head of the South Korean delegation to the talks.

Seoul plans to seize the opportunity of this extraordinary meeting with the North to raise the issue of resumption of meetings between families separated by the war 1950-1953, while Pyongyang wants to devote most of the talks to the file of reunification of the peninsula.

The head of the North Korean delegation to the talks with South Korea said he expected the inter-Korean talks to go well on Tuesday.

"Today, North Korea and South Korea will hold talks in a serious and sincere way," said Ri Sunjun, chairman of the Peaceful Unity of the ancestral land committee, before entering the site of talks on the inter-Korean border.

The two Koreas agreed last week to hold the talks in the border village of Panmunjom, which signed a ceasefire agreement in the Korean War.

This is the first North-South meeting since December 2015.

The talks will focus on Pyongyang's participation in the Winter Olympics, which begin next month in Pyongchang, South Korea.

But the delegates will also take the opportunity to discuss other topics.

The Korean war ended with a truce rather than a peace treaty, and the two Koreas are still technically at war, so cross-border communications, messages and phone calls are forbidden .
