Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has suspended peace talks with rebels of the National Liberation Army (ELN) after attacks he said rebels carried out earlier on Wednesday.
"I spoke with the head of the government delegation to Quito and asked him to return immediately to assess the future of the operation," Santos said in a televised address.
Peace talks between the Colombian government and the latest rebel groups were to resume in Quito, the capital of neighboring Ecuador on Wednesday, but the 100-day ceasefire expires at midnight with no agreement.
Santos confirmed that the "National Liberation Army" resumed "terrorist attacks against civilians, armed forces and infrastructure."
The tension coincides with the visit of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterich to Colombia at the end of the week "to support peace efforts," his spokesman said in New York.
