The United States has developed a new way to warn its citizens about the dangers of traveling through a four-level safety system and an interactive map of the world that identifies several countries, including Iraq, Iran and five Arab countries.

The United States has listed 10 war zones and collapsed states in level four: Do not Travel - Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

North Korea has also been classified at the fourth level with additional restrictions as US law bars US travelers from using their passports there, which means that travel is prohibited.

Some ratings may surprise or less international outrage. The State Department says it offers advice that was originally in place but in a new style.

Officials stressed that the change aims to make the advice more obvious to American travelers, although the system of travel warnings has long been controversial and considered by many humiliating countries.

"These are not political documents, they are warnings based on our assessment of the security situation," said consular official Michele Bernier-Thoth.

The ranking puts the top European allies of the United States, such as Britain, France and Germany in the second level: "Take more caution", while Uzbekistan is classified in the first level: "Follow the usual precautions."

US President Donald Trump ordered in January 2017 a travel ban for seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iraq, which sparked a wave of public outcry and anger.

But Trump excluded Iraq from the embargo as a partner and ally in the fight against terrorism. Finished
