Information / follow-up ...
The US State Department confirmed Thursday that Russia is trying to keep Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in power for stability and ending chaos in the country rather than maintaining its own regime.
Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Satterfield said in a speech at the hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee: "In my opinion, Russia is concerned, among other things, like the Soviet Union in the past, "This is not just for Assad, but for stability and an end to the threatened chaos."
Satterfield announced earlier that the United States intends to resolve the Syrian crisis through the United Nations in return for Russian efforts in this area.
