A British research center has warned of an "unintentional" nuclear strike if any country possessing such weapons is attacked by cybercrime gangs.

In a recent report, the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) pointed to "weaknesses" in systems that control nuclear weapons, which could lead to wrong information reaching decision-makers.

The report, which was highlighted by The Times, said that "electronic vulnerabilities in nuclear weapons systems pose a major threat."

"In the worst case, cyber attacks could intentionally send false information (systems), which would inadvertently launch nuclear weapons," he said.

The report cited "the possibility of an electronic penetration of nuclear armament systems, that these systems developed before the significant advances in computer technology, at a time when electronic attacks were not taken into account."

"As a result, current nuclear strategies may overlook the widespread use of digital technology in nuclear systems," the report said.

The countries that officially declare their possession of nuclear weapons are the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China, as well as other nuclear powers including Israel, India, Pakistan and North Korea.
