About Agencies

Iraq on Thursday called for its participation in the Sochi conference on the Syrian crisis, scheduled to be held at the end of January.

The Iraqi ambassador to Russia, Haidar al-Athari, said in statements that his country's participation as an observer in the talks was "necessary", adding that the situation in neighboring Syria "has a direct impact on the internal situation in Iraq."

Al-Athari also stressed the need to "benefit from the experience of Iraq in the fight against terrorism and talk," he said.

The Geneva talks last month ended without tangible progress, while the Syrian regime stepped up attacks in the past few days in Idlib province in the northwest.
